Architectural Ceramics

Our experts answer some frequently asked questions about our range of Japanese architectural ceramics by Inax.

They explain the unique qualities and applications of architectural ceramics.

Inax was founded after producing the terracotta with Frank Lloyd Wright for the famous Imperial Hotel, Tokyo in 1924. Although the history of exterior tiles in Japan had only just begun, the idea that each tastefully designed piece could help define a space started from here and is still alive today. Since then, various exterior tiles have been used in the outer walls of buildings, beautifully decorating Japan’s cities and streets.

We introduced the terms architectural tiles/ceramics because they were no other tile products on the market that were designed for use this way. Traditional tiles were only being used for traditional applications like bathrooms and wet areas.

Our range of architectural ceramics are feature products that are often three-dimensional and not traditionally grouted. Most have a mesh backing and primarily used as an exterior building material. These products are water resistant and not susceptible to damage by weather, graffiti or any other exterior extremes.

90% of our architectural ceramic range are made from clay and are predominantly porcelain products. There are about 50 standard designs in the current range with each available in many different colours. With Inax, we have the ability to produce custom designs which usually have a minimum order of approximately 300sqm.

Inax’s range of architectural ceramics do not vary from batch to batch. The material is put under a particular light that identities if there are any tonal variations and any variations are removed.

Inax is recognised for its innovative range of interior and exterior architectural ceramics that embody superb manufacturing and leading designs by traditional artisans. Artedomus is the exclusive distributor of Inax in Australia.
